Papahānau-mokuākea Marine Debris Project

The Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project (PMDP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to keep the remote reefs and shorelines of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands) free from harmful marine debris.

Each year, over 115,000 pounds of derelict ghost nets accumulate on the reefs here, and tens of thousands of pounds of plastics wash up on the shorelines. PMPD works closely with state and federal management agencies to plan and execute annual collaborative large-scale cleanup efforts to ensure the best chance of survival for endangered Hawaiian monk seals, threatened green sea turtles, numerous species of seabirds, and delicate coral reefs. PMDP pairs cleanups with local outreach efforts on Oahu and student-driven development of alternative solutions for the recycling and repurposing of the marine debris waste-stream.

PMDP is also currently building a mobile ocean plastics recycling space in partnership with local high schools to recycle ocean plastics into new (recyclable) products. Which are designed and created by students.

Zero Waste O'ahu

Zero Waste O’ahu is on a mission to (re)build a waste-free Hawaiʻi. They’re working on multiple different initiatives to achieve this but our donations in particular will go towards their Full Cycle Take-Out program.
What Full Cycle is aiming to do is create O’ahu’s first reusable takeout container program. They’ll provide local food trucks the opportunity to offer waste-free dining for their customers.

Zero Waste will provides clean, sanitized containers to food trucks so that customers can dine waste-free, dispose of their container in a collection bin, and have it be picked up to be sanitized and distributed again.

Through this project, ZWO expect to decrease the waste from up to 10,000 takeout containers that would otherwise end up at the incinerator or coastlines. Every time we reuse a container, we are reducing the amount of green house gasses and waste in our world.

The Plastic Bank

The Plastic Bank is a platform built to stop plastic from entering our oceans and alleviating poverty in penurious areas.

The Plastic Bank works by acting as a convenience store for the world’s poor. However, instead of accepting money as their currency, they accept plastic waste. Workers in these areas can exchange the plastic waste they’ve collected from streams, coastlines, and other areas, for digital tokens. From there they can use these tokens to provide their family with necessities such as groceries, school tuition, and health insurance.

The collected material from the workers are then reborn as Social Plastic®, which is reintegrated into products and packaging. This creates a closed-loop supply chain while helping those who collect it.

Already, The Plastic Bank and their supporters have helped remove over 44 million pounds of plastic from our environment, the equivalent of over 1,000,000,000 plastic bottles.
